For the Love of Black History Month Part 2
For the Love of Black History Month: More Than Just Chocolate Milk
Black History Month: a time to bust out the soul food, maybe catch a screening of "Black Panther" (again!), and… wait, is that all there is? Let's be real, while enjoying some delicious collard greens is a must, Black History Month is about so much more than just chocolate milk (though, let's not pretend that's not a highlight). It's about celebrating the incredible contributions of Black people throughout history – from groundbreaking scientists and artists to courageous activists who fought for equality.
Think about it: Harriet Tubman, the "conductor" of the Underground Railroad, outsmarting slave catchers like she was playing a real-life game of hide-and-seek. That takes serious ingenuity and courage! Or what about George Washington Carver, turning peanuts into everything from paint to plastics? Talk about a multi-talented entrepreneur! These are just a few examples of the incredible achievements of Black individuals who have shaped our world.
But Black History Month isn't just about looking back at the past. It's about looking forward and building a brighter future. It's about recognizing the ongoing fight for racial justice and equality. It's about asking ourselves: "What can I do to make a difference?"
Here are a few things we can all do, big or small:
- Educate Yourself: Read books, watch documentaries, and visit museums to learn more about Black history and the ongoing struggle for racial justice. (Pro Tip: Pick up a copy of "Between the World and Me" by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Between The World & Me It's a powerful and thought-provoking read.)
- Support Black-Owned Businesses: From local restaurants to online shops, supporting Black-owned businesses helps to boost the Black community and create economic empowerment.
- Speak Out Against Injustice: Whether it's a casual conversation or a public protest, use your voice to speak out against racism and discrimination.
- Amplify Black Voices: Share the stories and perspectives of Black people on social media, in your conversations, and in your everyday life.
- Celebrate Black Excellence: Acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of Black people in all areas of life – from sports and entertainment to science and politics.
Let's make this Black History Month more than just a week of celebration. Let's use it as an opportunity for growth, for learning, and for taking action towards a more just and equitable society.
